Symptoms - Swelling at the umbilicus for some time. Painful at times. Does not fully go back in even on lying down.  Diagnosis - could be umbilical hernia You should see your doctor who will likely order an Ultrasonogram of the abdomen and if it is confirmed you will need to see a surgeon who might request a CT scan of your abdomen and proceed to hernia repair surgery which can be done either laparoscopically or by open surgery.                                                       Umbilical hernia seen at Laparoscopy
Symptoms - Lump on back with a black mark. Increasing in size. Had discharged foul smelling material once in the past. Diagnosis - likely a sebaceous cyst. Please see a surgeon. He has to do a physical examination and order some tests. A surgery to remove the lump will likely be needed.
Symptoms - Lump in breast, painless, young patient, no nipple discharge Diagnosis - Possible fibroadenoma Please consult a surgeon, ideally a breast surgeon, who will examine you and order an Ultrasonogram of the breast. If a lump is found, then it could be a fibroadenoma. However you need to exclude a carcinoma, and hence a FNAC may be ordered, and if a fibroadenoma is confirmed, your doctor may decide a wait and watch policy or advise surgery to remove the lump.
Symptoms - Right lower abdominal pain with loss of apetite, nausea and vomiting Sometimes there may be constipation or diarrhoea.  Diagnosis - These symptoms could be due to appendicitis. However gynaecological conditions or stones in the kidney or in the uerter could also be a cause for your symtoms.  You need to see a doctor preferably a surgeon who will need to examine you, order some investigations like an Ultrasonogram or even a CT scan of abdomen to get further information. If Appendicitis is confirmed, a Laparoscopic / open surgery may be needed to remove the pathological appendix. A ruptured appendix could still result in significant morbidity or even turn fatal in case of severe sepsis. So once the diagnosis is confirmed it is better to follow the surgeon's advice. However if a gynaecological / urological cause is found, then your doctor will possibly refer you to the respective departments.

Symptoms - Upper / Right sided abdominal pain with or without indigestion, flatulence, acidity. Pain radiating to the back towards the shoulder blades. Yellow discolouration of the skin, urine ( jaundice ) Diagnosis - The above symptoms could be due to gall stones.  You need to see a doctor who will possibly ask for an Ultrasonogram of your abdomen.  If the diagnosis gets confirmed that you have gall stones, the you will need to see a surgeon who will examine you and order other necessary investigations to consider your gall bladder surgery. Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery is now the gold standard. However open surgery could still be needed at times depending on the clinical scenario or if laparoscopy fails. In addition if you have stones in the bile duct, then you may be referred to a gastroenterologist, who will possibly carry out an ERCP to clear the bile duct before your gall bladder surgery.                       ...

After working for 10 years in the United Kingdom, I came back to Kolkata, India in 2005, and since the have been working at a corporate hospital in Kolkata as a Senior Consultant Surgeon. Over the years here in India, I have realized that there has been a lot of misconception and lack of understanding about surgical diseases and their treatment in the general population and misleading information circulating around. This will be my humble effort to answer any such queries from the common man and provide information to the best of my abilities. However I must say that there is no alternative to a face to face consultation with your doctor and a proper physical examination of the patient by the doctor to ascertain the exact nature of the disorder and plan out the appropriate treatment. Hence my advice will not be anything more than providing a basic information and please make sure you...
